Which Foods Are The Worst For Your Dental Health?

Summer is almost here! You may be making adjustments to your diet to get yourself back in shape and to work on your summer body. Your diet plays a significant role in maintaining energy and fitness and helps in keeping your body running efficiently and fighting disease.

But did you know that foods which are good for our health can also have an adverse effect our dental health?

According to dentist, Dr. Saili Rekhi, there are a number of foods and beverages that can impact your teeth and gums by causing cavities or damaging your teeth.

So why should you care about what you eat and drink? The obvious answer: A poor diet can cause various dental problems which can lead to tooth decay and pain according to the American Dental Association (ADA).

Here is a list of some of the worst foods and drinks for your teeth and what you can do to counteract their decline on your teeth:

  • Sodas & Coffee - Sodas and coffee can leave stains on your teeth and the sugar can be left behind, causing little sugar bugs to eat at your teeth. Limit your intake where possible and Mix baking soda and water, and brush your teeth with it every few days to counteract the effects
  • Pickles - Pickles are great for other benefits, but for your teeth, they are high in acid. Simply limited how often you eat them will help. So if you are a pickle connoisseur, just eat them less often ;)
  • Citrus - for the same reason as pickles, citrus fruits are great in other ways, but strictly speaking about their effects on your teeth, they are very high in acid and can erode the enamel on your teeth.
  • Sports & Energy Drinks - Some of those energy drinks out there have as much as TWENTY (20) teaspoons of sugar per can. That's a lot of sugar and can really damage your teeth quickly. Limiting these can severly decrease your chances of getting those dreaded "sugar bugs"

Other foods and drinks to avoid:

  • Alcohol (especially red wine)
  • Ice
  • Dried fruits
  • Chewy, sticky and hard candy
  • Crackers
  • Popcorn
  • Cough drops
  • Breath Mints
  • Corn on the cob
  • Tomatoes
  • Beets
  • Berries
  • Curry

Alternatives to these “not so good” foods and drinks

  • Dairy products
  • Green tea
  • Green and leafy vegetables
  • Foods with fluoride
